Beauty of the Week Nazem Kadri

This Beauty of the Week hails from London,
Ontario. Nazem Kadri is the tender age of 21
and is currently playing for the Toronto Marlies
the AHL affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Kadri celebrates a goal during a call up
Property of the Maple Leafs

Nazem grew up playing minor hockey for the London Junior Knights of the MHAO
not to be confused with the London Knights of the OHL.

In 2006-2007 Kadri made the jump to
junior hockey with the Kitchener Rangers
who drafted him 18th overall in the OHL
Priority Selection.

In his second season in the "O", he amassed
65 points in 62 games. The Rangers went
deep into the playoffs, but were eliminated
Kadri with the London Knights
property of The London Knights
in the final round of the Memorial
Cup by current Admirals Tyler Johnson and
Dustin Tokarski  and the Spokane Chiefs.
The Chiefs would go on to win the Mem
Cup.

After the 2007-2008 season concluded,
Nazem was traded to his hometown
London Knights for the 2008-2009
season going into his draft year.
Kadri lined up for a hit on Barrie Colts
forward and current Admiral Alex Hutchings
and broke his jaw on Hutchings' helmet.

Nazem was selected to participate in the
ADT Canada Russia Challenge, but could
not play due to his jaw injury.  The let-downs
did not stop there.  It continued when he did not make the cut for Team Canada for the 2009
WJC Tournament.

All his hard work paid off when the Toronto
Maple Leafs called his name in Montreal.
Kadri was selected 7th Overall in the 2009
Kadri
Property
of
The AHL
NHL entry draft.

Kadri is now playing for the Toronto Mariles
of the AHL. The highly skilled forward has had
numerous call ups to the Leafs during his 2
years pro. The London native is out with an
injury and it is unknown if he will be dressing
in either Game One or Game Two when the
Marlies invade Scope to do battle.

Nazem is of Lebanese descent and he is Muslim.  He is just the fourth Lebanese
player to play in the NHL and the
second Muslim.  Kadri also won the Silver Medal in the 2010 WJC Tournament with
team Canada when he did make the cut. It is
for these reasons I chose him Beauty of the Week.

There is a sign on the boards in Scope that says "When the ice melts the Tides will rise."
Well I hate to tell the Tides that the  Admirals ice has not melted, but sits armed and  ready to be battled on by both Clubs when the lights come on at Scope  June 1st after the starting lineup

The latest Admirals hockey was played at Scope on May 18, 1998 when the Admirals beat the Pensacola Ice Pilots in Game 5 of the ECHL Kelly Cup finals.  The Admirals went on to win that series in Game 6.

This will mark the first trip to the Calder Cup by both Clubs.
The Marlies have a lot of injures including former Bolt prospects Carter Ashton and Matt Lashoff.

Property of the AHL
Ashton has a concussion and Lashoff has an upper body injury.  An article stated that the long break in between series would give these guys a chance to heal. We all wish them speedy recoveries and hope to see them on Scope ice soon.

I hope to see big crowds at Scope. Believe it or not the Admirals do hear how loud the Scope gets and it feeds their fire. Coach Cooper has touched on it during locker room speeches when the team was down by a couple goals during the streak heading into the third.

Because It's the Calder

Norfolk Admirals Logo

Well the Norfolk Admirals have advanced to the Calder Cup finals against the Toronto Marlies,
the AHL affiliate of theToronto Maple Leafs,
for the 1st time in their AHL existence.

Game One is in Norfolk on Friday at 7:30. Norfolk has only lost three times in the playoffs and has an overall playoff record of 11 and 3. The Marlies have a playoff record of 11 and 2.

This will not be a walk in the park by any
means for either teams. Both teams are
offensive juggernauts. The Marlies have an
impressive 44 GF and 23 GA. They also have
3 players that use to play here in Norfolk most recent Carter AshtonMatt Lashoff and tough
guy Jay Rosehill.

The Marlies have 5 of the top 20 scorers in the
AHL Calder Cup playoffs while Norfolk has
3 with Alex Picard being Number 1. The
Admirals will have to come out playing their physical game and wear them down with the body.

With so many Norfolk players being from
the Toronto Metro area it will be exciting
to see how many players will have friends
and family in the stands when they play
at the Ricoh Coliseum.   Norfolk Admirals
forward Cory Conacher has already bought
his fair share of tickets according to his
twitter account.

Toronto goalie Ben Scrivens has started
in every playoff game during Toronto's
Calder Cup Campaign. He has 11 wins
and only 2 loses. He has an impressive
goals against average of 1.61.

Keep an eye out for Toronto forward
Nazem Kadri. He is a highly skilled
prospect for Toronto. I knew about this
kid before he got drafted by the Leafs
while he has still playing in the OHL.

Beauty of the Week Cory Conacher

Conacher in action
Picture property of the NHL
This Beauty of the Week hails from
Burlington, Ontario.   Conacher is the young age of 22. Cory is listed at 5'8 and weighs 180 pounds. Before college and pro, the Burlington native played Junior A hockey in the Ontario Junior Hockey Leauge for his hometown Burlington Cougars putting up 62 points in 48 games played.

Cory played his college hockey for Canisius College.  Conacher was named the 2009-2010 Atlantic Hockey Player of the Year.  While majoring in Finance and playing D-1
hockey, Cory put up 147 points.  He owns
12 single game records as well as single
season records.  Cory raised the bar by recording
12 GWG and 3 hat tricks over his 4 year stay at
Canisius.
Conacher playing for Canisius

After earning his degree in Finance and
graduating from Canisius, Cory played in 3
games with the Cincinnati Cyclones of the
ECHL netting 5 goals and 2 assits in 7 games
at the end of the  2010-2011 season. He also played 2 games with the Rochester Americans where he lit the lamp once in two
games.  After the Americans were done with
his service, he caught on with the Milwaukee Admirals were he had 5 points in 5 games. Conacher also played 7 games in the
AHL playoffs in 2010-2011and only registered
1 point.

Conacher has type one diabetes. This
has not stopped Conacher who has
managed his diabetes and hockey
since the age of 12.  The insulin pump he wears helps him manage his sugar levels. His diabetes and his size has scared NHL teams away in the past. Conacher has proven that he can take care of his body and play at the high level the American Hockey Leauge requires.

In the summer of 2010-2011 Conacher signed an AHL SPC
with the Norfolk Admirals and received an invite to NHL Training
Camp as well as Prospect Camp with the Tampa Bay Lightning in the summer. During pre-season he
caught the attention of Tampa's
top brass.   He was rewarded
by being put on a line with
NHL superstars St. Louis and Lecaiver.

Shane Conacher
Picture from Burlington Cougars
In his rookie campaign with the Admirals Conacher signed a 2 year deal with Tampa
during the middle of the season. Conacher
won the Les Cunningham Award which is awarded to the AHL MVP.  Conacher's
Award Ceremony didn't stop there.   He
also took home the Dudley (red) Garrett
Memorial Award which goes to the AHL
top rookie.  Conacher is a scrappy forward
who doesn't back down from a scrum or dust
up. He will stand up for himself which I
admire in a small player.  He has earned the nickname the Honey Badger because of his
never back down attitude. Conacher has a
brother who is following in his foot steps.
Shane Conacher plays for Cory's old
Junior A team the Burlington Cougars and
is attending Cory's Alma matter Canisius
College on a scholarship. During the AHL
All-Star game the announcer for the game
said we could see Cory in the NHL as soon
as the next year. The sky is the limit for Cory.

Norfolk Moves to the Calder Cup Finals!

The Norfolk Admirals swept the St. Johns Ice Caps

Once again Norfolk goalie Dustin Tokarski got
the start in Game 4.  Meanwhile the Toronto
native Eddie Pasquale got the nod for St. Johns.
At the 15:15 mark of the 1st period, Norfolk
Captain Mike Angelidis was parked in front of
Ice Caps goalie Eddie Pasquale creating a screen
that led to D-man Evan Oberg shooting the
puck from the point and notching his second goal
of the post season.

Shortly after the Oberg goal, Ice Caps D-man
Paul Postma  was whistled for slashing at the 16:01 mark of the 1st. At the 17:47 mark,  Tyler Johnson scored from a weird angle that seemed to look like a pass but ended up being Johnson's 3rd playoff goal
on the PP.

St. Johns was zero for four on the PP.
Excellent penalty killing was one of the
stronger points for the Admirals in Game 4. Tokarski turned away all 29 shots he faced. Norfolk peppered away at Pasquale making him face 42 shots in total.

At the end of the game with 2:00 minutes remaining in the Ice Caps season, the sell out crowd at Mile One Centre stood up and
cheered their hometown team. That showed
me how much support a first year team
had.  Canada says hockey is their game.
They proved  how much class they had
by  cheering on their loosing team. You'll
never find that type of support in Norfolk from
a sellout crowd.

Get your Brooms out Norfolk!

So tonight at 6:00 pm (EST) your Norfolk Admirals have a
chance to sweep the St. Johns Ice Caps in the Eastern Conference
finals. If the Ice Caps win tonight, the Admirals will stay in St. Johns
at least until Saturday. If the Ice Caps win Saturday, the Ice Caps and
Admirals would come back to Norfolk with the series tied.
Let's hope that does not happen.

The Admirals came out playing their physical game
again.  St. Johns seemed to be less physical
"Labs"
taken by NHL images
this time around and tried to play their
 strength-- their  finesse game.   Dustin
Tokarski got the nod from Coach Cooper. Meanwhile the Ice Caps Coach Keith McCambridge gave Eddie Pasquale the start.

Tokarski played his best playoff hockey thus far shutting out a very potent Ice Caps offense who has 33 GF so far in the playoffs. You named it Tokarski stopped it. The
Admirals defense stayed in position and got the puck out when needed and also killed some major penalties including some
five on threes. I've been very impressed with
# 21 Mike Koskta for Norfolk lately.   I think
when he scored twice the other night it was a
confidence booster. And yes people, he has a
cannon of a shot from the blue line.
Janus
coutresy of flickr.com

The real hero of this story is Pierre Cedric
Labrie who scored the game winner deep into
the 1st overtime.  "Labs" blocked an Ice
Caps shot and took off down the ice with the puck and beat Eddie Pasquale with a simple wrist shot.

The officiating in the game was very fair. The crew of Jamie Koharski and NHL contracted referee Mark Lemelin seemed to call a fair game.

People who selected the 3 Stars in St. Johns must be a little bias. Eddie Pasquale received the 1st Star Award when in all reality Pierre Cedric Labrie should have gotten it. C'mon
who wants to talk to their hometown team after
an OT loss like that. It's a little bias but I guess
thats Newfound hockey on the "rock"
for y'all folks.

With Eddie Pasquale losing three games in a row
David Aebischer with Phoenix
Taken by azcentral.com
will we see David Aebischer, an NHL vet?
I'm curious about Cooper's desicon tonight
in Net--will he go with Tokarski or will he
put in a full rested Janus. We shall see.   Both
have been outstanding in the playoffs.

The Alex Picard Show!

Picard
So the Admirals are two wins away from moving
on to the Calder Cup finals.

The Admirals opened the game with a goal by
Richard Panik at the  0.51 mark in the opening frame.
Evan Oberg and Trevor Smith picked up the assits.

Three minutes later a puck rang off the post that would
have put the Admirals 2-0, but the goal was waved off
by referee Franics Charron and the red light never came on.
It looked like the right call from where I was sitting.

The Ice Caps started Pasquale in Game Two.
His defense looked to cave in front of him.
Dustin Tokarski got the nod for the Admirals.
The Admirals defense was tight and did not
leave Tokarski hanging, only allowing the
Picard's sick Cele
Ice Caps one goal.

In the second at the 1:51 mark, the Ice Caps
tied it with a goal by John Albert.
Man...the rest of the game was all about
Alex Picard. Picard has been out half
the season with injuries.  He only played
in 42 regular seasons games with the
Admirals. During that time he put up 25
points.  However in the playoffs, he has
put up 14 points in 12 games. Picard was
drafted in the 1st round in 2004 8th overall
by the Blue Jackets.
Pic giving Tic props
after the game

Picard lit the lamp twice--first in the second
and then notching an empty netter in the 3rd.
Picard plays a very physical game. He is like
that gnat at a BBQ that's always in your face.
He also is not afraid to drop the gloves.
He dropped the gloves with Sean Avery
this year when Avery played with the
Whale. Picard loves to chirp and get
under his opponents skin and get them
off their game.

He is also the joker on the team.
He is always posting jokes about
Admirals rookies Tyler Johnson
and Cory Conacher on his twitter.

If Picard can keep this pace he will win the
Jack A. Butterfield Award that is awarded to
the playoff MVP--Hands down!  The Admirals,
Picard looks like JarJar Binks.
Ice Caps and Game Three Referees,Jamie Koharski
and Mark Lemelin, flew up to St. Johns together.
How odd that sounds, but it saves the AHL and
Admirals money. If you thought there would be a
riot on the plane you were wrong. These guys battle
on the ice and leave everything on the
ice until next game. True professionals!

Ice Caps get lit up in Game One of the AHL Eastern Finals

Wow! So how about that Norfolk Admirals game last night?

Mike Kostka opened the scoring for the Admirals
Thursday night.

The Ice Caps came out playing a very
physical game.  That did not affect the Admirals game at all.   At the 18:55
mark in the 1st period Mike Kostka
scored  from the Norfolk blue line while
Trevor Smith was parked in front of Ice
Caps goalie Eddie Pasquale creating a
beautiful screen.   Make it 1-0 Admirals
on the PP.

It would remain quiet for the rest of the 1st.
Tokarski came up with some big saves. The
Ice Caps play a real positional game which opened up passing lanes but Tokarski shut
them down when there was a hole in
the Admirals defense. The Admirals
PP was really clicking last night.

Michel Ouellet lit the the lamp on the PP at the
3:08 mark in the 2nd period.  Rookie
Tyler Johnson and Admirals All-Star defenseman
Mark Barberio got the assits on the goal

Mike Kostka
notched his 2nd goal of the night taking the Admirals swagger to a whole new level.  They played with a ton of energy outworking the Ice Caps in every  department.   J.P. Cote notched his 1st post season goal. The Admirals fed  off of the fans energy. After the Cote goal,  the Ice Caps made a goalie change and pulled Eddie Pasquale.   He had played every minute in the Post Season for St. Johns until then.  The NHL veteran net-minder David Aebischer came into replace Pasquale. He didn't do so hot either by the way.

Now its time to rant a little..

The Calder cup!
The Ice Caps came out in the 3rd with a chip on
their shoulders.  Ice Caps forward Garth Murray went
after Alex Picard after the whistle in the corner. Picard
was holding his own in the pushing and shoving match
until Norfolk's Captain Mike Angelidis came in to stand
up for Picard like any Captain would and made Murray
drop the gloves. After the majors where over towards
the 18:03 mark in the 3rd, an Ice Cap got in a dust up
with Kostka and the Ice Cap pulled Kostka's blonde
lettuce (aka hair) that sent Picard into the scrum
and Picard and Murray received game misconducts
for their language or actions. Look up AHL rule
Game misconduct 75.4.  I mean what hockey
player will go so far as to pull an opponents hair.
It's sad when a player disrespects the game he loved
as a kid and now get paid a boat load of money
to play. Oh well the Admirals got the last  laugh
final score 6-1.  Rematch Saturday at scope at
8:00 pm...

From the Courtroom to the AHL

Coach Cooper
Good afternoon avid readers.  In this entry, I will be
profiling AHL Coach of the Year Jon Cooper.
Cooper became the head coach for the Norfolk
Admirals prior to the 2010-2011 campaign.  Before turning to coaching full time in 2003, Cooper was a criminal defense attorney in Michigan.

Coops is a naturally gifted coach which is demonstrated by his 1st season, 1999, as a coach when he coached a Canadian high school team and led them to their first championship in over 25 years!  In 2002, the Prince George native coached the Metro Jets, a US Junior tier 3 team, to the National Championship.

Cooper holds both US and Canadian dual citizenships which allowed him to coach the USA U-18 IIHF team in
2008. He won Silver with the US U-17 team in 2007 in the Five Nations Tournament.

Coach Cooper Armed and Ready
Coops moved on to the NAHL and
was Coach and GM of the St. Louis Bandits
for 5 seasons posting an impressive record
of 223-93-17 that includes playoffs and
regular season.  During the 2006-2007
season, Cooper coached current Admiral
D-Man Jeff Dimmen in St. Louis.

Cooper cut his teeth in the USHL with the
Green Bay Gamblers where he served as
GM and Coach. He once again posted
excellent numbers during his tenure
84-27-9.  Cooper also led them to two
Anderson Cups! Cooper was named
Cooper speaking to his troops
when he Coached the Green Bay
Gamblers of the USHL

GM and Coach of the Year in 2009 and 2010.

When Stevey Y took over the Tampa Bay
Lightning in 2010, he hired Cooper to led
the Admirals into the post season. Cooper
delivered but the Ads lost in the 1st round to
the WBS Penguins. Over the past two seasons,
Cooper has a record of 94-44-10-8.

Cooper won the Louis Ar Pieri Award which is awared to the leagues best coach and is voted on by the media.

With all these accomplishments under his belt,
Cooper is on the fast track to the NHL.
There are a handful of teams that need
a head coach. I think he is in the running
for a NHL coaching postion and will be even
more so if the Admirals can win the Calder this year.

Subban playing with the

there has been no looking back for Malcolm.

In 2011 he represented team Canada in

Hockey Gods work in weird ways. Here, the guy takes one in the Chiclets, gets a couple of chipped teeth. He looks like the Joker right now."

Panik scores the Game winner in OT
Property of @bulldog2518k

Good Afternoon in this blog edition I will be writing about the game 6 overtime hero #14 for your Norfolk Admirals Richard Panik.  Panik played two years pro in Czech Pro league for the HC Ocelari Trinec before being recruited to play Major Junior hockey in Canada.  His numbers for Trinec  over two seasons looked like this
2007-08Trinec Ocelari HCCzech60000-3--------
2008-09Trinec Ocelari HCCzech151124-4

After being drafted by Tampa Bay in 2009 round 2 #52 overall, the Slovakian native
played for the Windsor Spitfires of the
through the 2009-2010 campaign, he
was traded to the Belleville Bulls.
After his junior season ended, he
signed an ATO with the Norfolk
Courtsey of @bulldog2518k
Admirals where he saw action
in 5 games and had 1 point.

In addition to being traded and playing his 1st pro games,  he played for his country in the
2009 World Junior Tournament where he scored 6 goals had 8 points in 6 games played. He also played for his country in the 2009-2010
World Cup where he played in 6 games and had 2 points.

In the middle of his 2010-2011 junior campaign, he was dealt from Belleville Bulls to the Guelph Storm. In May 2011 he signed a 3 year entry deal with Tampa Bay.

Fast forward to May 11, 2012 when Tyler Johnson shot a slapshot that hit Panik in the face. Panik automatically flipped off his helmet skated over to the bench to get a towel and placed it over his

mouth and face. Panik came back just in time.  Coach Coops put Panik in within minutes of his return.  Panik skated through the
Whale defense and received a beautiful tape to tape pass by Alex Killorn which led to a break-away goal on Whale goalie Cam Talbot. What a beauty of a goal it was!!

If this is the future of the Tampa Bay organization  I am
more than happy to be calling myself a Tampa Bay fan.

Former team-mates Tyler Johnson and Dustin Tokarski look to win the Calder cup together!

Tyler Johnson playing for Spokane
Good evening all.. today I will be writing a piece on Norfolk Admirals' center Tyler Johnson #25 and Admirals' goalie Dustin Tokarski #34.  The 5'9 center and the 5'11 net minder played two seasons together (2007-2008 and 2008-2009) for the Spokane Chiefs of the Western Hockey League.

In 2008  Tokarski led the Chiefs, to a  Memorial Cup win against the Kitchener Rangers of the OHL with a final score of 4-1.  The hardware does not stop there for Tic. He won the Stafford Smythe Memorial Trophy which is awarded to the MVP of the Memorial cup tournament. Tokarski was also awarded the The Hap Emms Memorial Trophy which is given to the best goalie at the Tournament.
Tokarski is in the middle the goalie with the blue pads.
Tyler Johnson is all the way to the right.

He also collected the Gold medal for team Canada at the 2009 World junior tournament. Tic made the highlight reel with this save.. Dubed the save of the year.  That led to Tokarski getting drafted

Former roommates battle in Eastern Conference semi-finals.

A great showing of sportsmanship after game 6

Well the Admirals move on to the eastern finals either against the St. Johns Ice Caps or W-B-S Penguins. The series of these two teams will end tonight and the winner will move on to face Norfolk in the Eastern finals.

Last night after the game, we witnessed one of the best traditions in the game of hockey...the handshake line. Watching Mike Vernace was hard. He played one and a half seasons with Norfolk before getting traded to the Florida organization with James Wright for Evan Oberg and Mike Kostka.  Later in the season, Vernace got traded to the New York organization were he was assigned to the Whale.

As you can see from the picture Angelidis and Vernace were very close. They were roommates in Norfolk and always had each others backs on the ice and off the ice.
They are both from the Providence of Ontario about 30 minutes away from each other.

Vernace was a leader on the ice.  He got the honor of donning the A on his jersey for the Admirals before getting traded this year. He always stuck up for his teammates. If he needed to drop the gloves to hype up the team or stand up for a team mate he would not hesitate. He is a very sound defensemen. He reads the play well with very few turnovers or mistakes. He is not afraid to throw his 200 pound frame into the play if necessary.

Mike Angelidis was named Captain for the 2011-2012 campaign. Angelidis is the definition of a leader. He will go out and try to spark his team with a fight or a big hit if they are playing flat. He will also rally the troops if they are in a warm up brawl. Angelidis got to play his first game in the NHL this year with the Lightning where he scored on his 1st shot in the NHL. Angelidis also does alot of things in the community which makes him a great role model off the ice. Mike "Jesus" Angelidis won the Dan Snyder Memorial trophy when he played junior hockey for Owen Sound Attack in 2005-2006.  which is awarded to the Humanitarian of the Year.
